Range Officers' Responsibilities

The Ramapough Sportsmen Association ( the Association) has been granted use  of the range by virtue of a a sub-lease that was granted by the Village of Suffern in consideration of upkeep, maintenance and safe operation of the facility.    

It is essential that all rules and regulation be adhered to at all times.

  1. The range will be controlled at all times by a range officer.  No one will be allowed on the Range unless a range officer is present.

  2. It is the Range Officer's responsibility to sign out the range key and return the key to the Suffern Police Department.  The Range Officer may elect to turn over the key to another Range Officer if the individual is willing to take over control of the range upon verification of his/her being a Range Officer.

  3.  The Chief Range Officer will have complete and and total authority over the range.

  4. All Range Officers will be subordinate to the Chief Range Officer.

  5. The Chief Range Officer will carry out the Association's rules, regulations, and policies as mandated by the membership and as directed by the Executive Board.

  6. A Range Officer will have authority to close down the range if an unsafe condition is present or if range maintenance is required.

  7. A Range Officer may eject a shooter from the range for cause if he/she feels that the individual has created an unsafe condition on the range.  This action will be noted in the Range Log Book and a report made to the Executive Board.

  8. Any member not in agreement with a Range Officer's decision must abide by it and then must immediately file his/her complaint or grievance with the Executive Board through the Recording Secretary of the Association.

  9. All members of the Association who will serve as Range Officers will be well versed with  the Rules and Regulations and must be capable of  conducting orientations of new members.

  10. All members of the Association that are currently a NRA Certified Firearms Instructor, Coach, Counselor, or Range Safety Officer are eligible to be a Range Officer and will provide service to the Association by serving as a Range Officer for a designated time at the range.

  11. All members of the Association are required to attend a range safety orientation and attest that they fully understand the Range Rules and Regulations before they are permitted to discharge any firearm at the range. They will submit a signed certification of such orientation.

  12. The use of bowling pins as targets is not permitted.  The use of steel plates, in any configuration, as targets is likewise not permitted (with the exception of the knockdown plates currently installed for use on shooting points #1 - 5)
